EAST WARD LABOUR CLUB — 30TH BIRTHDAY

A surprise 30th birthday for around 100 guests, with a dark-room entrance, speeches, karaoke and a crowd that took some reading before the right party classics brought everyone together.

A surprise 30th in Bradford

A familiar venue, but one of the tougher crowds I have had to read.

This 30th birthday took place at East Ward Labour Club in Bradford in August 2025. Around 100 guests attended, with the DJ booking running from 7pm until 11pm in the recently renovated main function room.

I already knew the venue extremely well, but the music brief was less obvious because it was a surprise party. Before Aidan arrived, family and friends were gathering without giving away too much about what he normally listened to, so I tested a range of eras from the 80s through to modern music and watched how the room responded.

This booking also happened before the current Aidy Smith website and online booking system existed. The sound, booth, lighting and other practical decisions were agreed directly before the event rather than selected through the booking flow used today.

30 The surprise everyone was waiting for
The entrance

Lights out, music off, and the whole room waiting in silence.

Everyone arrived before Aidan and the room was already fairly busy. When it was nearly time for him to arrive, the venue lights were switched off, I stopped the music and everybody went quiet. After roughly five minutes, Aidan walked into the function room to a wall of cheering from family and friends.

Aidan was well known at East Ward Labour Club and was serving on the committee at the time, so it felt less like a room full of strangers and more like the club surprising one of its own regular faces.

Finding what worked

The night changed once Aidan started feeding me the room’s favourites.

Because there was no detailed music brief, the opening part of the night involved trying different eras and styles to see what landed. It was one of the more difficult crowds I have had to read straight away, which is exactly why a fixed playlist would have been the wrong approach.

As the night went on, Aidan wrote down songs he knew would work with his family and friends. Familiar tracks such as Come On Eileen and Sweet Caroline helped turn the room into a shared singalong, while UB40 became another clear favourite.

The useful lesson: knowing the birthday person’s crowd can be more valuable than guessing from age alone. Once those personal pointers started coming in, the room became much easier to steer.
What got the room involved

Not one genre — a mixture of shared moments.

The strongest parts of this party came from familiar songs, people singing together and giving different groups something they could join in with.

A few speeches broke up the music and gave family and friends their own moments during the evening.

Children spent plenty of time dancing and running around in front of the stage.

The night worked best when the music reflected the people Aidan actually knew rather than one predefined style.

The setup used in August 2025

A straightforward stage setup with no subwoofers needed.

The DJ position was on the main stage in the function room. This records what was actually used for this particular booking rather than the equipment available on current packages.

By the time of this party, the main function room looked fresh, modern and newly finished.

More than another venue

I had been coming to East Ward Labour Club for more than 25 years.

I have known the club as a regular for decades and had also worked behind the bar there with my mum, Christine. Most nights I remember have been friendly and straightforward, with very little trouble beyond the occasional argument that can happen when people have had too much to drink.

About the room and venue

A Bradford social club with a proper function room and a long local life.

External venue records give some useful context beyond this one party. CAMRA lists East Ward Labour Club on Otley Road as a members club with parking and a function room. A current Savills property listing describes the building as a two-storey social club originally constructed in the 1970s, with a members lounge, central bar area and a function room stated to hold up to 150 people.

That capacity helps put this 30th birthday into context: with roughly 100 guests, the room was busy without being at its stated limit. My own experience of the room in August 2025 was that the recent renovation had made the main function space feel much newer and more modern than the building’s age might suggest.

What I changed afterwards
STAGE
SPACE

Nothing was damaged, but it changed how I protect the DJ area.

Later in the night, a couple of guests who had become a little too drunk ended up on the stage and fell into the DJ booth. Nobody was hurt and the equipment was fine, so I would not describe it as something going wrong, but it was a useful wake-up call.

They stayed off the stage after that. On later bookings I also began moving the speakers further forward so there was little or no spare space for guests to stand or walk directly in front of the DJ setup. It is a small layout decision, but it creates a clearer boundary around the working area and reduces the chance of the same thing happening again.

How the night finished

Aidan got the surprise, and the room found its own rhythm.

For a party that started without a clear musical direction, it finished as a genuinely enjoyable family-and-friends night. Aidan enjoyed the surprise, the karaoke gave people another way to join in, and the songs he suggested helped me understand the crowd much faster than trying to force one particular era or genre.

It is also a booking I remember because it combined several things that still matter now: reading the room, listening to the person the event is actually for, adapting the setup when something teaches you a lesson, and treating a familiar venue with the same attention as somewhere completely new.
