EAST WARD LABOUR CLUB — 18TH BIRTHDAY
A real Bradford 18th birthday for around 80 guests, with the DJ setup on the stage in the main function room and music running from 7pm to 11pm.
An 18th birthday in East Ward Labour Club's main function room
On 24 July 2026 I DJ'd an 18th birthday at East Ward Labour Club in Bradford for roughly 80 guests. The booking ran from 7pm until 11pm, with the complete DJ position set up on the stage in the club's main function room.
The room was fairly full once everyone had arrived. Food was available during the evening and a balloon arch had been positioned next to the stage; you can see it beside the DJ setup in the hero image before the guests came in.
Pop, dance, requests and party classics
This booking was before my current online booking system, so there was no structured pre-event music planner. I worked from pop and dance, took requests during the night and adapted the set as the room responded.
The first tracks to properly bring people onto the dancefloor were well-known party classics, which then gave the rest of the evening its direction.
A Bradford club with roots going back to the 1890s
East Ward Labour Club has a much longer history than the present-day function room might suggest. Academic research into Bradford's Labour movement records East Ward Labour Club in April 1895, while modern venue listings use the description “Est. 1892”.
The current club building on Otley Road is from a later period. Commercial property particulars describe the building as originally constructed in the 1970s, and the Bradford Timeline records East Ward Labour Club on 28 June 1974. The same modern particulars describe a members' lounge and function room, while CAMRA also lists a function room and parking at the club.
Venue background checked against University of Edinburgh historical research, Bradford Timeline, commercial property particulars and CAMRA's venue listing.
A stage-based setup worked well
For this 18th birthday the DJ booth, speakers and lighting were all positioned on the stage. That kept the performance area together and left the main floor available for tables, food, guests and the dancefloor.
With around 80 guests in attendance, the room felt well occupied rather than sparse.
The actual 18th birthday setup
This was the equipment used for this particular booking rather than a generic current-package list. My equipment has changed since this event, so newer bookings may use a different sound system or lighting combination.
Before the guests arrived and later in the night
The first clip shows the stage setup and room before guests arrived, including the lighting and balloon arch beside the stage. The second was recorded later from behind the DJ position while the birthday was under way.
A full room, flexible requests and a four-hour party
With food available and guests settling in, the night did not need to begin at maximum energy. The set could move through familiar pop and dance tracks while I took requests and watched what was getting a response.
Well-known party classics were what first got people properly dancing. From there I kept the music flexible rather than forcing one genre for the full four hours. By the end of the booking the feedback I received was that they had really enjoyed the night.
