How Far in Advance Should You Book a DJ for a Party?
For a straightforward party, around a week can be enough for me to prepare if I am still available. For weddings, Christmas parties and dates that need more planning, I would aim for around a month or more.
My normal recommendation
Around a Week Is Enough for Many Parties
For a normal party, I would usually say that around a week is enough notice for me to put the booking together, provided I am still free on the date. That gives me time to confirm the venue details, plan the music, decide what equipment is needed and make sure everything is ready before I arrive.
That does not mean you should deliberately wait until a week before the party. If your date is fixed and you know you want me to DJ, checking availability earlier removes the risk that somebody else has already booked the same night.
Events that need more planning
Allow Around a Month for Weddings and Christmas Parties
For weddings, Christmas parties and similar events, I would be happier with around a month or more. There are normally more details to confirm and less room for things to be rushed.
A wedding may have particular songs for key moments, a more detailed running order and venue timings that need to work around the rest of the day. Christmas parties are also concentrated into a relatively small number of dates, so availability can disappear quickly.
Preparation time is only half of it
Availability Matters More Than a Fixed Deadline
There is a difference between how much time I need to prepare and how far ahead you should check whether I am free. I may be able to prepare for a straightforward party in a week, but I cannot take the booking if somebody else already has the date.
A Month Is Better
More notice gives us time to cover key songs, timings, venue details and any equipment choices without squeezing everything into the final few days.
Check as Soon as You Know
If you have a date you definitely do not want to lose, there is no advantage in waiting for the recommended minimum notice before asking.

I Still Need Time to Prepare the Booking
Even when the party itself looks simple, I do not want to turn up without knowing what I am walking into. The preparation is about making sure the music, venue and equipment fit the booking.
Plan the Music
I need enough time to understand the music direction, must-plays, do-not-plays and any songs needed for specific moments.
Check the Venue Details
Access, room layout, setup times, power and whether the venue has its own suitable sound equipment can all change what I need to bring.
Choose the Right Setup
The equipment can vary with the event, venue and type of booking, so I want that decided before loading everything for the night.
Confirm When I Can Set Up
For a full mobile setup I normally want around two hours before guests arrive, so the venue needs to be able to give me access early enough.

Last-Minute Bookings Can Sometimes Work
I am not against last-minute bookings. If I am free and there is still enough time to organise the music and equipment properly, I can sometimes take a booking at short notice.
The closer the enquiry gets to the start of the party, though, the fewer options there are. I still need to know what music is wanted, what equipment is required, where I am going and when I can get into the venue.
Why truly last minute is difficult
A Full Setup Still Needs Around Two Hours
The full mobile setup is the main reason a booking immediately before a party is difficult. I normally allow around two hours before guests arrive to unload, assemble the booth, position the speakers, set up the lighting, connect everything and sound-test the system.
That two-hour setup window is before the performance starts. I also have to travel to the venue with the equipment already prepared, so a call shortly before the party begins is unlikely to leave enough time for a full setup.
One exception
A Venue PA Can Make Short Notice Easier
If the venue already has a suitable PA system and I only need to bring the DJ equipment required to perform, a short-notice booking can be much easier to organise. There is less equipment to transport, position and connect than with the full mobile system.
That does not remove the need for music preparation or checking that the venue equipment is suitable. It simply means the physical setup can be much lighter than arriving with the complete booth, sound system and lighting package.

I need time for the equipment preparation, transport and roughly two hours of setup and testing before guests arrive.
Suitable Venue PA
If the venue already provides the sound system, the physical setup can be simpler, which may make a genuinely short-notice booking more realistic.
Securing the date
An Enquiry Does Not Hold the Date
Checking whether I am available is the first step. The booking is only confirmed once the event details, price and requirements have been agreed and the required deposit has been received.
So if the date matters, it is better to finish the booking rather than assume that an earlier enquiry has reserved the night.
