GEORGE & DRAGON, WHITLEY DJ
Halloween kids’ party by day, fireworks at dusk, then a busy disco and karaoke night. Here’s how it went at the George & Dragon in Whitley.
DJ at the George & Dragon, Whitley
I arrived at about 3pm to set up and the pub was really quiet. An hour later it was a different place. Families were arriving for the children’s Halloween party, with a big Trick or Treat banner, cobwebs and decorations around the room.
I was booked for two sets: 4–6pm for the kids, then 7–11:30pm for disco and karaoke. The crowd kept growing as the afternoon turned into evening.
Compact sound and Halloween lighting
It was a compact indoor space, so I brought my two black LD Systems ICOA 12-inch speakers and a black DJ booth to suit the Halloween decorations.
For lighting I used two UV lights, Spider lights and a moving head. My laptop, channel mixer and microphone were ready for the karaoke later on. The purple lighting worked particularly well with the room’s Halloween theme.
From kids’ Halloween songs to karaoke classics
4–6pm: I played children’s party favourites and Halloween songs. The pub was busy, with around 80 adults and children there for the afternoon party.
About 6:30pm: We all headed outside for the fireworks. It was a brilliant display and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
7–11:30pm: By the evening there were roughly 100–150 or more people around. I started with Halloween tracks before moving into party classics and popular karaoke songs.
The pub also had food on during the evening, including burgers.
Guests got involved
People used my Live Room to request songs and chat during the party. It worked well alongside the disco and karaoke, and the feedback on the evening was positive.
Getting the gear into the George & Dragon on Doncaster Road, Whitley (DN14 0HY), was straightforward apart from a couple of steps. The staff were lovely and I got on really well with the owner, Dave. I’d happily recommend the pub for birthday parties too.
As children were there, I photographed the DJ setup only, not guests inside the party. The fireworks clip below includes people watching outside from behind.

Fireworks before the evening disco
A highlight of the night was stepping outside with everyone to watch the fireworks. The display was great, and it was a lovely break between the children’s party and the evening session.
I’ve kept the full video here, including the people watching at the bottom of the frame. It captures the atmosphere much better than the sky-only edit.
