Two Cities Of Ravers, Two Different Scenes

Bradford and Leeds sit close enough together that DJs, promoters and crowds naturally overlap, but I would not treat them as one identical scene. Leeds has a larger and more regular club calendar, while Bradford has its own D&B history, local nights and underground music scene across the city and surrounding district.

That makes the two cities useful to look at together. A promoter in Bradford may book artists who regularly play Leeds, a Leeds crowd may already know DJs from Bradford, and people will travel between the two for the right lineup or sound system.

Bradford Has Its Own D&B History

My own connection to drum and bass in Bradford goes back well before Audio Demon became the name I use for specialist D&B bookings. In 2003 I ran a night at Bradford University under Sub Urban Beats (S.U.B.), with G-Dub and Dysfunktion on the lineup.

I have also played drum and bass nights at Bradford venues including The Love Apple, The Mill and Bradford Rios. Those older nights are part of why I do not see Bradford simply as somewhere next to Leeds. It has its own audience and its own history with underground music.

The current public calendar is not as dense as Leeds, but that is different from saying the scene does not exist. Bradford nights often appear through smaller promoters, mixed underground bills and one-off events rather than a constant weekly D&B schedule.
